Fluid Dynamics

The Fluid Dynamics course (both lecture and exercise) consists of two parts. The part 1 "Fluid Dynamics: Fundamentals" will be in English and takes place during the first half of the semester. The part 2 "Fluid Dynamics: Advanced" will be in German and takes place during the second half of the semester.

Abstract

An introduction to the physical and mathematical foundations of fluid dynamics is given. Topics include dimensional analysis, integral and differential conservation laws, inviscid and viscous flows, Navier-Stokes equations, boundary layers, turbulence, potential flows, unsteady flows, aerodynamic concepts, vorticity dynamics, compressible flows.

Objective

Introduction to the physical and mathematical principles of fluid dynamics. Fundamental terminology/principles and their application to simple problems. Concepts, phenomena and quantitative description of potential, rotational, and one-dimensional compressible flows.

Content

Dimensional analysis, integral and differential conservation laws, inviscid and viscous flows, Navier-Stokes equations, boundary layers, turbulence, potential flows, unsteady flows, aerodynamic concepts, vorticity dynamics, compressible flows.

Examination

Type
session examination
Mode
written 90 minutes and 120 minutes
Aids
Fluid Dynamics: Fundamentals - IFD formulary (Prof. F. Coletti), non-programmable calculatorFluid Dynamics: Advanced - Fluiddynamik, Skript zur Vorlesung (Prof. Jenny et al.), nicht programmierbarer Taschenrechner
There will be a double written exam consisting of two parts: part 1 "Fluid Dynamics: Fundamentals" will be in English with a final exam of 90 minutes, and part 2 "Fluid Dynamics: Advanced" in German with a final exam of 120 minutes. The overall final grade will be the average of the final exam of part 1 and the final exam of part 2.Participation in two voluntary interim exams during the semester is encouraged. The first interim exam (covering part 1) will be carried out about half way through the semester, and the second (covering part 2) will be carried out towards the end of the semester. Interim exams will be carried out under the same conditions as the final exams. Each interim exam will be given a weight of 15% to the grade for the respective part, only if the grade of the interim exam is better than the respective final exam.
