Abstract
The course explores living systems' complexity and unpredictability, discussing emergence, interbeing, and non-linearity. Living Systems Labs are introduced as places to navigate and intervene in complex systems. Key elements include emergence for social innovation and leveraging nature-centric reflections.
Objective
The learning objective of the second course module is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of living systems, encompassing biological and social complexities. The module addresses the inherent unpredictability within these systems and explores strategies for navigating this uncertainty. It seeks to elucidate where engineering interventions may be warranted and where they may be contra-productive, emphasizing the need to balance knowledge with humility regarding our limits of understanding. Concepts such as emergence, interbeing, and non-linearity are introduced to help participants grasp the intricacies of living systems and identify effective points of intervention. Metaphors, such as the "View from Above," are utilized to encourage holistic perspectives and highlight the interconnectedness of system elements. Practical engagement within living systems labs, like the local-regional “hatchery” economy project in Hemsedal, Norway, offers participants opportunities for hands-on experimentation and learning in real-world settings. The module incorporates philosophical reflections, nature-centric perspectives, and insights from scholars like Daniel Christian Wahl to enrich participants' understanding and inform their approaches to intervention and progress within living systems. Overall, the objective is to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to engage thoughtfully and responsibly with the complexities of living systems. The learning objective assessment starts in the preceding MOOC with a multiple-choice quiz. To pass, 70 percent of the questions must be answered correctly across all modules. Active attendance in the live sessions with experts is also required for each module. In addition, the Quest’s progress is monitored continuously in the peer-learning process and through individual discussions with the lecturers.
