Abstract

This summer school discusses the intersection between science and policy, demonstrating how scientists can tackle global challenges and have an impact outside of the lab while reflecting on challenges they might face in this endeavour. Through interactive workshops and role-playing, participants acquire new skills, ranging from negotiation skills to the writing of a policy brief.

Objective

The aim of the summer school is to address the following questions: To what extent can science impact public decisions on local and international levels? How do scientists working on topics of high public interest interact with policymaking to get their voices and expertise both heard and properly represented in an ethically responsible manner? In which ways can scientists and engineers take direct action in their careers to shape society? How to quantitatively and qualitatively define and measure impact and reflect on the ethical implications of innovation? What are the most effective ways to engage with the general public and to communicate scientific findings and analyses to non-scientific audiences?
