Qualitative and Participatory Research Methods for Development Practitioners

Abstract
Qualitative research has much to offer to the practical work of development organizations. This course will provide an overview of the principles and practice of qualitative research and illustrate ways in which qualitative research can be incorporated into the programme cycle. Participants will learn to collect and analyse data, using qualitative methods.
Objective
The course aims to demystify qualitative research and build the skills of development practitioners in using qualitative methods confidently, and to communicate findings to different audiences.
Content
• The qualitative research approach. • Qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus group discussions and participant observation. • Designing and planning qualitative studies. • Qualitative data analysis and interpretation. • Reporting of qualitative results. • Embedding qualitative research within a project cycle.

MAS in Global Cooperation and Sustainable Development (The compulsory courses of NADEL are accessible only for students of the MAS in Global Cooperation and Sustainable Development and for qualified employees with at least two years experience in development cooperation and a Master's level or equivalent level of education as recognized by ETH. PhD students doing empirical research in development cooperation may be admitted "sur Dossier". The elective courses are open to master students of the ETH with registration/ waiting list. MAS students do have priority.)
