Abstract

This course provides the student with a solid understanding of quantum phases with non-trivial topological properties. At the end of the course the student will be acquainted with the theoretical description of the integer and fractional quantum Hall phases, symmetry protected topological states like the topological insulators and quantum spin systems.

Objective

The goal of this course is to provide the student with a solid understanding of quantum phases with non-trivial topological properties. The course is aimed at the graduate level and requires basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid state physics. The necessary tools and concepts are introduced on the example of the integer quantum Hall effect. At the end of the course the student will be acquainted with the theoretical description of the integer and fractional quantum Hall phases, symmetry protected topological states like the topological insulators and quantum spin systems.
