Advanced Introduction to Planning Theory
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:37:42
Abstract
Readings on contemporary planning theory provide a framework for discussing, analysing, and critically reflecting on planning and the planner's role. As we examine the role of theory in planning theory, we explore various conceptual frameworks and guiding principles. As a result of these frameworks, future urban and regional planners will be able to analyse, understand, and make informed decisions
Objective
Planning for cities occurs within a complex context, in which many different actors have conflicting interests and differing perspectives. Planning processes are characterised by multiple competencies, interests, and arguments. Considering this vantage point and the situated reality of intricate complexities, one may ask why it might be helpful to theorise planning practice. Throughout the course, we explore the foundations and essentials of planning theory in order to equip future planners and city makers with the conceptual tools necessary to address complex city and spatial problems. Consequently, theory is viewed as both an argumentative and a sense-making device that provides and prepares future urban decision-makers with structured, reflexive, situated, and informed modes of thinking about urban and environmental transformations.
Content
General The course covers both theoretical aspects and practical topics. Theoretical concepts illuminate specific aims and aspects of planning processes while emphasising reflexive and situated decision-making as a vital but challenging task in planning. Throughout the course, lectures and readings are supported by practical examples. We discuss the applicability of scientific concepts and philosophical approaches to contemporary spatial and infrastructure problems. Seminars and workshops provide opportunities to discuss core issues while practicing different forms of discussion, presentation and interaction. These modes of intervention illustrate the multitude of roles in city planning processes. The workshop allows students to deepen their understanding by applying theoretical insights to concrete urban or regional planning examples through collective assignments. Specific The course discusses some of the main lines in contemporary planning theory. It focuses on the relation between knowledge and action, between politics and ethics. After completing the course, you can: •Define and explain the key concepts in contemporary planning theory and relate them to one another. •Identify actors and various interests and arguments in planning processes. •Analyse planning and policy processes critically and theoretically. •Identify, compare and evaluate the different roles of actors in the process. •Describe and reflexively analyse the planner's role and responsibility. •Suggest suitable planning methods in various settings. •Write a scientific article where a planning or policy process is analysed.
