Last Updated: 2026-02-05 14:54:43
Abstract
This course offers an introduction to the methods we use in literary study to analyse the fuctioning of poems, plays and novels. It is intended for ETH students who want to broaden their horizon of English literature, and keep in touch with the language.
Content
This course will offer an introduction to the methods we use in literary study to analyse the fuctioning of poems, plays and novels. Such analysis is intended to help us understand how and why we enjoy books, and to give us a language with which we can discuss them. The topics to be treated will include: How do writers represent reality in works of fiction? Why does a writer choose a specific literary form like novel, lyric poetry or drama? How does the writer control point-of view, the reader's uptake, meaning and value? We will be discussing these and other questions with specific examples, partly from handouts. In addition, three texts will be studied: William Blake, Songs of Innocence and Experience; James Joyce, Dubliners; Arthur Miller; Death of a Salesman.
