Architectural Design IV: Build on an old dream (GD R. Boltshauser)
Entwurf IV: Weiterbauen eines alten Traums (GD R. Boltshauser)
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:39:01
Abstract
We now want to use the experience gained in the autumn semester through the revitalisation of the village centres in dealing with the rich Engadine building culture to take on the fallows that has arisen as a result of the structural changes away from the historic centres.New forms of use and further building carry larger structures, such as formerly magnificent hotel buildings, into the future.
Objective
- Addressing dense, sustainable, circular, simple building - Development of a broad theoretical basic - Holistic design of spatial atmospheres in the interplay of concept, context, construction, climate, sustainability and materiality - Research and development of architectural themes resulting from energy and climatic considerations - Practical work with models, plans and visualization programs as part of the design process
Content
Architectural Design IV: Hotel buildings in the Engadine are witnesses to a time of social prosperity and the changed perception of the Alpine region as a health resort and holiday area. The emergence of Alpine tourism in the mid-19th century crystallised into different hotel typologies; solitary palace- and castle-like structures sought dialogue with the landscape, contrasting in scale with the historic village centres. New forms of tourism have led to the decay and emptying of these satellites, while non-residents occupy the village centres sporadically. Thanks to the insights gained during the autumn semester, we are looking at alternative scenarios for the continued use of this hotel infrastructure, as a complement to the revitalisation of the villages.
