The Discomfort with Humans in the Anthropocene
Das Unbehagen mit dem/n Menschen im Anthropozän
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:38:06
Abstract
At the latest since the anthropogenically caused climate change, traditional notions of human beings have become cracked. This raises the question of our role in nature. Some talk about decentering man, others abiut a revolt against humanity or even its its complete disappearance. Strong stuff - and therefore the goal of the seminar will be to get a better understanding of these new views of man.
Objective
The aim of the seminar is to critically reflect on the current discussions about images of man in anthropology, ecology and philosophy.
Content
The Enlightenment has put man on a pedestal, and even the theory of evolution has not questioned homo sapiens as the most highly developed living being. That there is something wrong with this privileging of man is the lesson of the 20th century. We learned about man as a deficient being and of man's alienation from the world, unable to keep up with her own technical and cultural achievements. In view of the climate catastrophe, critical views have developed that no longer grant human beings a privileged position on earth or even regard our species as an ecological disruptive factor. Can anything be learned from such theories for a responsible approach to the world?
