Vertiefung Notfallmedizin
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:37:00
Abstract
The module serves as a refresher for the emergency medicine content already covered. Building on this, relevant emergency medicine topics are dealt with and discussed in small groups. A sequence on emergency without aids and an OSCE post run round off the module.
Objective
Emergency-Refresher: -The students can identify the most common causes and recognize clinical signs of an acute respiratory problem and will be able to apply important measures to remedy an airway obstruction. - The students can identify the most common causes and recognize clinical signs of a respiratory problem and know principles as well as initial measures of therapy. - The students will learn to know different forms of shock and the basic pathophysiological distinction between them and can reproduce and apply different therapy strategies and initial measures. - The students will be able to perform BLS with AED at provider level (medical professional). - The students will be able to quantify a loss of consciousness, know common reversible causes and their initial therapy. They will know prehospital strategies for recognizing a stroke. - The students will learn the principles of spinal and extremity immobilization and be able to apply them to the patient. Emergency Sonography: - The students will be familiar with the normal findings on lung sonography and will know the most important sonographic signs of pneumothorax and recognize pleural effusion. - The students will recognize important sonographic signs of cardiac left ventricular decompensation and cardiogenic shock that complement the physical status. - The students will recognize sonographic signs and clues for the major obstructive causes of shock. - The students will recognize important complementary sonographic signs of hyper/hypovolemia to physical status. - The students will recognize sonographic signs of intraperitoneal hemorrhage as a cause of hypovolemia. The learning objectives for the theme day emergency, brush-up, pharmacology in emergency medicin, emergency without resources and OSCE exercise will follow.
Content
Emergency Refresher: Students will learn initial pre- and in-hospital measures for the management of acute life-threatening conditions using the ABCDE scheme. Further to that, instructors will use patient case vignettes to train recognition as well as clinical awareness of emergency situations in small groups, as well as to develop solution strategies and promote knowledge of the material. An official BLS-AED certificate can be obtained as part of the course. Emergency Sonography: Students will gain insight into the most important emergency sonography applications based on the topic shock and develop an understanding of the point of care application of sonography. Using simple patient vignettes, small groups will practice the most important emergency ultrasound applications, explain their significance and the clinical application situation. Item C on the Emergency-Refresher course serves as the foundation for this course. Brush-Up Students will repeat all emergency content in self-study using a moodle course. At the end they will take a quiz on moodle. The results of the quiz will serve as the basis for a repetition of emergency content in 4 lessons. Pharmakology in emergency medicine "Pharmacology in Emergency Medicine" serves on the one hand as a refresher for the module "Pharmacology for MED" in the second semester and on the other hand as input for the use of pharmacology in emergency medicine. The course is held in English. Theme day emergency Four relevant topics in emergency medicine will be covered on the theme day emergency: - Metacognition: Cognitive distortions in emergency medicine - Ethical aspects in emergency medicine - Psychological aspects in emergency medicine - The limits of emergency medicine After a theoretical input, students can discuss the content in small groups and apply the knowledge they have acquired. Emergency without resources The students will go through a course with several emergency situations that have to be solved without clinical aids. The focus is on the initial medical care of patients so that they can be treated comprehensively at a later stage. OSCE exercise The students will go through four OSCE exercises in groups of four, with each person taking on one of the following roles: Doctor, Observer, Filmer and Timekeeper. The focus of the exercise is feedback from the lecturer and reflection in the group. In addition, an emergency transfer task is solved in the group and the two practical exercises are practiced again.
