Writing Nature, Knowing Nature

Abstract
Nature writing is a booming genre. But why? What is so appealing about it? What can narrative and essayistic descriptions tell us about nature that the natural sciences seemingly cannot tell? What kind of knowledge does Nature Writing promise and generate?
Objective
Starting with current Nature Writing, we will revisit classics of the genre and then go back to antiquity (essentially a time "before nature") in order to discuss these questions. We will focus on metaphors, concepts, motifs and (primal) scenes to be found in these texts that shape our understanding of and need for nature until this day.
