Abstract

Organisms have to control their growth in accordance with environmental conditions. Interestingly, the pathways regulating growth often also affect aging. This course focuses on the analysis of growth regulation and aging in yeast, Drosophila, and mammalian cells. The participants will perform original research experiments to study various aspects of these two processes.

Objective

The aims of the block course are that participants (I) learn how genetic approaches in different organisms contribute to the understanding of complex processes such as growth regulation and aging (II) will get familiarized with reading research articles and discussing biological concepts (III) get a first exposure to current research.

Content

The block course consists of (I) experiments: Teams of 2-3 students each will join research labs to work on current projects focusing on aging and growth regulation in budding yeast, Drosophila and mammalian cells. The students will present their projects and results to their colleagues. (II) lectures and discussions on growth regulation and aging in yeast, Drosophila and mammals. (III) journal clubs to discuss recent literature.

Type
graded semester performance
The grading is based on (one third each)- performance in course experiments- presentations (experiments, journal club)- individual scientific discussion with lecturers.Students are obliged to be present throughout the block course.Cancellation: If you have to deregister from a course that has been assigned to you (just emergency reasons), please notify in written the course coordinator at least four weeks before the course starts, for courses in the 1st quarter, a cancellation period of one week applies. The study secretariat D-BIOL must also be informed (email CC [email protected]) so that the enrollment is deleted. Otherwise the course is considered as "failed".
