Abstract

This advanced research seminar deals with current issues and research in comparative politics and EU integration.

Objective

This seminar is designed for advanced students of political science with an interest in comparative European politics and EU integration. It introduces students to state-of-the-art theorizing, data, methods, and empirical findings and provides them with opportunities to work with data on their own. After taking this seminar, students should have a good overview of current research and be prepared to write their Master's thesis in this area. Students may also propose research topics of their interest.

Content

This semester, the Comparative and EU Politics research seminar focuses on the study of the international order. Why is the international order an important topic to explore? An international order is generally understood to enforce adherence to standards of behavior through a legal and institutional structure that includes all humankind, often a hierarchical structure that reflects political power. Political scientists agree that the norms and institutions underpinning the current international order, also called the liberal international order (LIO), have come under pressure from various challengers. The seminar aims to familiarize students with the theoretical conception of international order, how it evolved over time, what characterizes today's order and, of course, its challengers.
