Abstract

We will introduce toric varieties, study their combinatorial and abstract structure, and their basic geometry: singularities, Picard groups and cohomology. We will then branch out to more specialized topics depending on participants' interests and as time permits: logarithmic structures, semistable reduction, GIT, intersection cohomology, or equivariant cohomology are possible topics.

Objective

The objectives are: (1) the students should get a good grasp of the foundations of toric geometry (2) develop their skills in reading modern mathematics (3) develop their presentation skills. For each session, reading will be assigned, and a session leader. The session leader will then be responsible for leading the discussion of the assigned reading. Assessment will be based on participation in the discussion with particular weight for each student on the session they lead.
