Life Sciences Information Systems
Informationssysteme in den Life Sciences
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 14:57:19
Objective
A clear understanding of requirements and trends in life science data management
Content
The Life Sciences are currently undergoing a fundamental transformation from an experimental to an information driven field of research. Many Genomics and Proteomics instruments, for example, use embedded databases to manage, store, exchange, and reuse measurements. This seminar will present the special requirements for information systems in the Life Sciences, and provide an overview of current trends and technologies developed in industry and academia to address these challenges. Some of the topics are: coping with unstructured data; the pharmaceutical industry and FDA 21 CFR part 11; Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS); high throughput environments; world views of natural vs. computer scientists; emerging international metadata standards; successful system architectures; life science search engines; strategies for databases and XML; towards data integration. To experience the different world of Life Science research, two lectures will be held at the Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ). At least two bioinformaticians from the FGCZ and the University of Health Informatics and Technology Tyrol (UMIT) will present particularly challenging aspects of their work.
