Unmasking Space: A Collaborative Platform for and by Students
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:23:20
Abstract
Unmasking Space reflects on the structures, roles, and norms behind architectural projects and architectural education, and brings attention to the plurality of learning forms, voices, and methods already present within the student communities, recognizing the value of horizontal, non-hierarchical learning.
Objective
- Students should be able to understand and develop critical positions in relation to other spatial epistemologies introduced and explored in the course. -Students should develop a position on the agency of the architect in relation to the themes explored in the modules of the course. - Students should develop modes of articulating knowledge transfer within a group, in response to the curriculum informed by the contributions of external guests, ultimately suggesting a method for a self-initiated learning platform.
Content
Module 1: Unmasking context: Where are we now? We read, discuss, and reflect on our positions as students in the production of architectural knowledge today by engaging in a dialogue with student initiatives from TU Berlin and Accademia Mendrisio in response to set methodological statements including: community making, learning architecture and deconstructing the institution Module 2: Unmasking knowledge: Who knows? Guided by a variety of spatial practitioners with diverse expertise operating outside of institutional educational settings, we explore a variety of topics including reflections on a climate lexicon (by climatewords), southern urbanism (by Jhono Bennett) and reconstructing the institution (by ifa_diaspora and Volta Mendrisio). At the end of this module, a critical intervention will be planned collectively responding to our reflections and discussions. Module 3: Unmasking possibilities: where can we go? We appropriate urban spaces. We displace ourselves. We make homes. By shifting the learning spaces - to the city, to our homes, to an informal gathering, we aim to gain a better understanding of how we perform learning in multiple and collective ways. This will be structured through four contributions guided by Office Party, Kevin Lai, SEKUNDOS and Mike Zweidler.
