Abstract

The category of "Laboratory Courses, Projects, Seminars" includes courses and laboratories in various formats designed to impart practical knowledge and skills. Moreover, these classes encourage independent experimentation and design, allow for explorative learning and teach the methodology of project work.

Objective

The topic of energy is more relevant than ever: climate change, security of supply, petrol prices, the winter electricity gap, energy strategy, ..... the list is long. But what can and should we do as a society? Is it right to switch to electric cars and where does the electricity we need come from? Wouldn't hydrogen-powered cars be much better? And if so, as internal combustion engines or with fuel cells? How much surface area can and must be covered with solar cells in Switzerland to generate enough green electricity when the nuclear power plants are switched off? And are those on the roofs of houses in the Central Plateau, or above and next to the motorways, or in the Alpine regions? Isn't the risk of a blackout greater the more renewable energies we use? And why should nuclear power plants protect us from this? Or is this more a matter of the winter electricity shortfall? The list of questions is long and the answers are more complex than one might think. In this course, we deal with various topics on the question of "energy transition in Switzerland". In groups, you will each work on your own project and answer a question of your own choosing. In doing so, they will experiment as well as carry out estimative calculations. At the endof the P&S, each group summarizes the findings from their theoretical and experimental investigations and presents them in the form of a poster."
