Symmetries in Physics
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:22:41
Abstract
The course provides a self-contained introduction to symmetry groups in physics. It explains the relevant mathematical background (finite groups, Lie groups and algebras as well as their representations), and illustrates its importance in modern physics.
Objective
Participants will learn the foundations of finite groups and Lie theory within a physics context. They will understand relevant abstract mathematical concepts and constructions and will be able to apply them to problems in modern physics.
Content
symmetries in two and three dimensions, groups and representations, finite group theory, point and space groups, structure of simple Lie algebras, finite-dimensional representations; advanced topics may include: representations of SU(N), classification of simple Lie algebras, conformal symmetry
