Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:21:42

Abstract

This module focuses on the holistic view of patients. In addition to learning the basics of psychosomatic medicine, students can practice their communication skills directly in the clinical settings. Professional doctor-patient communication is a central requirement for successful medical practice in any clinical discipline.

Objective

After this module the students will be able to... - understand human health as a biopsychosocial reality. - understand the interplay of genetics, life history, and environment. - understand the relevance of biographical development and attachment experience. - reflect on pathogenetic mechanisms of psychosomatic medicine. - reflect on psychosocial factors and mechanisms that can lead to health disorders or their chronification. - reflect on the professional medical role. - reflect on the expectations of patients. - take a structured biopsychosocial anamnesis. - describe and apply different verbal and non-verbal techniques and communication styles of biopsychosocial anamnesis. - report on subjective countertransference feelings that arise during the taking of an anamnesis and use these diagnostically. - to elicit and explain the patient's subjective model of illness. - be sensitized to the importance of non-technical medicine. - acquire an understanding of the central function of the doctor-patient relationship and of psychosomatic relationships in medicine.

Content

20-40% of patients in primary care suffer from physical symptoms that cannot be explained organ-morphologically. These symptoms are absolutely real and can be understood if one understands the individual as a whole in his subjectivity, his stress-responsiveness, perceptive ability, relationship formation and life-biographical imprint. In addition to teaching basic knowledge in psychosomatic medicine, this module is characterized by the fact that in the afternoon students are given the opportunity to practice their communication skills directly in the clinical environment.
