Geology of the Alpine-Mediterranean Mountains and Basins
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:22:53
Abstract
The course is aimed at students in the Earth Sciences interested in the Alpine belt, from surface processes to crustal motion to mantle dynamics. It conveys the essentials of Alpine-Mediterranean geology while bridging the gap between regional geology and modern, process-oriented geodynamic research.
Objective
Based on a mix between class, field common and groups excursions and self-learning, the students will learn the main evolutionary steps that brought to the present Alpine orogeny, and will have first-hand experience of some of the main discussed topics by guiding a piece of the final excursion.
Content
First part as block course (after Easter), with lectures and practicals, and subdivision of topics and logistics for the final excursion. During spring-summer: preparation in pairs of the common excursion, with relevant literature and supervision from instructors. First week September: finalexcursion guided by students, with excursion guide.
