Abstract

The practical "Plant Diversity" (part colline/montane) focuses on the vegetation and flora of the colline and montane belts of the canton Valais. During a five-day excursion to Visp the students will get to know important vegetation units of the region and their ecological characteristics. In addition, they will deepen their knowledge of plant species.

Objective

Becoming acquainted with the flora and ecological conditions of the most important vegetation units of the colline and montane belts of the canton Valais. Consolidation of taxonomic and plant morphological knowledge. Basic collecting and herbarium techniques.

Content

This course gives an introduction to the flora and vegetation of the colline and montane belts of the canton Valais. During five day excursions the participants will become acquainted with the most important vegetation types, their species diversity and the respective environmental conditions. Besides deepening the knowledge of plant species, plant families and vegetation a focus will be laid on how man shaped the cultural landscape and continues to change it.

The participants are supposed to prepare themselves for the excursion with lecture notes that are provided in advance. Knowledge of the lecture notes is required for the closing examination.
