Abstract

The category of "Laboratory Courses, Projects, Seminars" includes courses and laboratories in various formats designed to impart practical knowledge and skills. Moreover, these classes encourage independent experimentation and design, allow for explorative learning and teach the methodology of project work.

Objective

In nanophotonics, the interaction of light with nanometre-sized structures is studied. For example, tiny and at the same time ultra-fast optical circuits are created for a new generation of supercomputers. In the P&S "Clean Room Technology", participants will gain a first insight into the BRNC high-tech research laboratory of ETH and IBM Zurich ("Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center"). After a general introduction to nanotechnology and working in a clean room, various nanophotonic materials will be deposited. Subsequently, the optical properties of the materials are measured with the help of so-called ellipsometry and analysed on the computer using models. The P&S ends with a presentation of the results and a short written summary. The P&S is offered for three groups of three participants on ten afternoons spread over the semester. We recommend the P&S for students in their third year of study. Previous MATLAB knowledge is advantageous, but not a prerequisite. The P&S is partly held in English.
