Abstract

On the emergency refresher day, students will learn to recognize emergency situations using the ABCDE scheme and to initiate initial measures both without and with the most common emergency medical aids.

Objective

The students can identify the most common causes and recognize clinical signs of an acute respiratory problem and will be able to apply important measures to remedy an airway obstruction. The students can identify the most common causes and recognize clinical signs of a respiratory problem and know principles as well as initial measures of therapy. The students will learn to know different forms of shock and the basic pathophysiological distinction between them and can reproduce and apply different therapy strategies and initial measures. The students will be able to perform BLS with AED at provider level (medical professional). The students will be able to quantify a loss of consciousness, know common reversible causes and their initial therapy. They will know prehospital strategies for recognizing a stroke. The students will learn the principles of spinal and extremity immobilization and be able to apply them to the patient.

Content

During the Emergency-Refresher students will learn initial pre- and in-hospital measures for the management of acute life-threatening conditions using the ABCDE scheme. Further to that, instructors will use patient case vignettes to train recognition as well as clinical awareness of emergency situations in small groups, as well as to develop solution strategies and promote knowledge of the material. An official BLS-AED certificate can be obtained as part of the course.
