Architecture and National Identities in the 19th Century

Abstract
The seminar explores the relations etween architecture and ideas about national identity in the 19th century. Through weekly readings and class debates, it will identify new institutions, publications, artists and architectural styles in connection with national ideologies as well as movements aiming to destabilise artis.
Objective
Gain in-depth understanding of national ideologies, the formation of nation-states and the involvement of architects and artists in the process. Reflect critically upon notions of national symbolism, artistic identity, ethnicity, heritage.
Content
Since the early part of the 19th century, new institutions, publications and specialisations promoted and practiced architecture as an integral part of new national ideologies. Later, new styles and forms of artistic expression sought to destabilise artistic hierarchies, forge new connections with folk and applied arts and promoted identities of regions, minorities or exotic lands.
