Objective

The course is designed to provide an understanding of the nutrient requirement of different population groups and to give an overview of the role of diet in the maintenance of health. It provides the basic knowledge to evaluate food products and supplements with health claims and to be able to give sound dietary advise for prevention of diseases.

Content

The human nutrition course is divided into two modules. The first 'The nutrition of different population groups' examines nutrition through the life cycle and includes the nutrient requirements during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. It also includes an evaluation of the special food products designed for these population groups (including infant formula, weaning foods, snack foods and sports foods) and of nutrition issues such as breast feeding, food allergies, eating disorders and Third World nutrition. The second module 'Diet and Health' examines the current views on the extent to which diet can help to prevent diseases such as coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity and anaemia. It also includes an evaluation of weight management methods and the recently developed functional foods (foods with an added health benefit).
