Abstract
The lecture on historical constructions deals with historical structures, building technology and mechanics. Each year, a different set of examples is selected.
Objective
The participants learn how to approach historical constructions. At the end of the lecture series, they have a basic understanding about the detailing, the effects caused by historic building processes, and the mechanical behaviour of historical buildings.
Content
In the spring term of 2022, we will cover: arches and vaults: historical development of the art of vaulting; a brief history of centring and falsework; structural performance of arches and vaults; development of arch theories from Blondel's rule to Castigliano's nonlinear elastic approach; arches and vaults in iron and concrete.
