Abstract

Introduction to the physical, theoretical, social and ecological basic concepts of landscape acoustics. Overview and application examples of the current techniques and methods of soundscape analysis and design.

Objective

Knowledge of theoretical and technical basic concepts of landscape acoustics, which combines physical, perceptual, social and ecological knowledge in a holistic approach. Application of current methods and techniques of soundscape analysis and design. The overarching goal of the course is to promote sensitivity for sound as a multifaceted dimension of landscape perception and design.

Content

The course conveys the theoretical and technical basic concepts of acoustics that are relevant for the outside space and leads to a holistic understanding of the soundscape by combining physical, perceptual, social and ecological knowledge / approaches. Using case studies from different epochs and cultures, the course promotes sensitivity for acoustics as a multifaceted dimension of landscape perception and design. Application examples and exercises on current methods of soundscape analysis and design as well as practical introductions to sound recording technology and the use of the AudioVisual Lab offer students the opportunity to become actors of the acoustic landscape quality themselves. Depending on the language skills of the participants, the course can be held in German and English. German and English texts are read and discussed. Detailed information regarding the course will be communicated at the beginning of the semester.
