Objective

The students are introduced to the basics and principles of the industrial measuring methods. They will receive an overview on specifications and application areas of sensor and actuator systems available today. The students will learn to evaluate a measuring method for an instrumentation problem, considering the boundary conditions.

Content

- Introduction: application and economic importance of sensor systems, selection criteria for measurement principle and sensors, quality characteristics of sensors, application examples of actuator systems. The sensor as a link of a measuring chain, client-specific specification of a sensor system. - Fundamentals of measurement technique and terms. - Active sensor systems: Fundamentals of piezoelectricity, detailed treatment of piezoelectric sensor systems with quartz, piezoceramics and PVDF film. Presentation of selected piezo sensor systems and their measuring amplifiers, piezogenerators for voltage generation and small power supply units. - Electromagnetic sensors, impulse wire sensors, thermocouples - Photoelements, pH sensors, Lambda probes. Practical demonstration of sensor and actuator systems.
