Sustainable Agroecosystems I

Abstract
This lecture with integrated exercises and farm visit introduces the factors, processes and interactions that control the functioning of temperate and tropical agroecosystems. Students will be guided to critically examine agricultural practices and management strategies to increase resource use efficiency, while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and ensuring socio-economic viability.
Objective
Students critically analyze concepts of sustainable agriculture.
Content
The course will address a wide range of agricultural and food systems topics in both temperate and tropical contexts, from the diversity of farming system, to climate smart agriculture to sustainable assessment. A wide variety of case studies will be presented, and complemented with a farm visit during the semester. Along the semester, the class is integrating practical exercises within a greenhouse.

The excursion is a farm visit, which will be conducted in German.
