Abstract
This class is dedicated to non-perturbative many-body effects in condensed matter physics. The interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking and topology (sensitivity to boundary conditions in the thermodynamic limit) will be studied by way of examples.

In this class I will show, by examples, how field theory can describe some important non-perturbative phenomena in condensed matter physics.

In this class I will show, by examples,how field theory can describe some important non-perturbative phenomena in condensed matter physics. I will start from the case study of polyacetylene and explain why polyacetylene supports emergent excitations that carry one half of the electron charge.Motivated by polyacetylene, I shall explain what are strong topological insulators and superconductors, symmetry topologically protected phases of matter, and fermionic invertible phases of matter.
