Abstract

This module provides an overview of safety in the chemical industry, focusing on toxicology, industrial hygiene, fires and explosions, hazards identification and risk assessment. It also introduces the fundamentals of environmental impact studies, focusing on life cycle assessment.

Objective

This module introduces the concepts and tools needed to understand and analyze the main hazards in chemical processes, including fires and explosions, chemical reactivity, toxic emissions, and equipment failure. It also provides an overview of the life cycle assessment methodology and how to use it to quantify the environmental footprint of chemical products from cradle to grave, covering carbon emissions, and impacts on human health and ecosystems.

Content

The module includes lectures on general safety principles, the fundamentals of fires and explosions and chemical reactivity, toxicology and industrial hygiene, risk analysis and quantification, and life cycle assessment. The lectures include both theory and coursework based on the concepts and tools explained.

Resources

Lecture Notes

The lecture notes will be delivered to the students in the form of slides and additional material.

Literature

The module is mostly based on the book Chemical Process Safety by Daniel Crowl and Joseph Louvar, Pearson Education US ISBN: 9780134857770.
