Abstract
The course offers an introduction into theories of globalization and presents key concepts of the analysis of processes of globalization. Among the many aspects of globalization – which is dealt with in its historical dimensions – the course focuses on the interactions between these processes on the one hand and technical and scientific developments on the other.
Objective
A) The students know central theories of globalization. B) They are familiar with different concepts of analysis of processes of globalization and are able to assess them. C) They are able to reflect, on this basis, on the interconnectedness between technical and scientific developments and processes of global entanglements.
Content
„Globalisierung“ ist ein Leitbegriff der Gegenwartsbeschreibung. Er bezeichnet damit auch gesellschaftliche, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Makroprozesse, denen eine zentrale Bedeutung zum Verständnis und zur Erklärung von technologischen Entwicklungen und wissenschaftlicher Wissensproduktion – auch in natur- und technikwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen – zukommt. Was unter Globalisierung indessen genau zu verstehen ist, wodurch die damit identifizierten Prozesse befördert werden und welches ihre Effekte sind, darüber gehen die Meinungen auch in der wissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit dem Thema auseinander. Die Vorlesung will deshalb wesentliche Erklärungs- und Deutungsangebote vorstellen und kritisch diskutieren, um damit eine Grundlage zu bieten für das Nachdenken über technologische Innovationen und wissenschaftlich generiertes Wissen in globalen Zusammenhängen. Präsentiert werden zum einen allgemein relevante Theorien und Analyseansätze zur Globalisierung. Zum anderen wird im Besonderen auf die Reflexion des Verhältnisses von Technik, Technologie sowie Wissenschaft und Globalisierung eingegangen. Gerade technologische Neuerungen und wissenschaftliche Rationalität werden immer wieder als wesentliche treibende Kräfte von Prozessen der zunehmenden Verflechtung von Lebensbereichen im globalen Massstab und der Komprimierung von Welt dargestellt. Gleichzeitig wird die Bedeutung der Globalisierung für die gesellschaftliche Rolle von Technologien und (Natur- und Technik-)Wissenschaften durchaus unterschiedlich beurteilt und erhält im Vergleich weniger Aufmerksamkeit in der Globalisierungsforschung als die Bedeutung für Wirtschaft, Politik oder Kultur.
