Abstract

How often they were annoyed about their twin-like fate! Ever since the end of the ‘50s, Frisch and Duerrenmatt were known to literary critics as well as to German-speaking readers and theater audiences as Castor and Pollux, the twins from Greek myth. In a 1961 interview, Frisch commented on this situation: “What else can we do but be friends?”

Content

How often they were annoyed about their twin-like fate! Ever since the end of the ‘50s, Frisch and Duerrenmatt were known to literary critics as well as to German-speaking readers and theater audiences as Castor and Pollux, the twins from Greek myth. In a 1961 interview, Frisch commented on this situation: “What else can we do but be friends?” The twin statue of the two of them no longer stands unmarred; the fact that their friendship did not last – if ever one existed – may have contributed to this. In any case, interest has shifted in recent years to the divergences in the work of these two writers. Not only scholarly works show that. It is also expressed in the public stereotypes of the cheerless Frisch and the jovial Duerrenmat: one a political extremist, the other a court jester. In this event, which is conceived as a lecture and colloquium, the attempt will be made to throw into relief similarities and differences in the work and worldview of the two authors. This will be done on the basis of biographical and sociological research and by means of careful reading of their texts.
