Abstract
Module 3: Residential Architecture as a Contribution to Developing Cities, Neighbourhoods and Housing EstatesModule 4: Sustainability in Residential Architecture
Objective
The students will provide a differentiated picture on the subject housing within its social, cultural and economic context. By working on a self chosen subject in their elective thesis, they reflect and analyse on the major problems and determine the players and practices, i.e. the subject area's field of action.
Content
Housing considered in context: architectural, cultural, social, technical and economic conditions and processes influence housing and modes of habitation. To what extent have they changed in the last century ? The construction and renovation of domestic space is a cultural process. What forces construct that space, and according to which criteria ? What are the constructional and organizational solutions with which they confront the diversity and metamorphosis of contemporary modes of habitation? How can postulates concerning a sustainable development be implemented? Insights culled from housing research and practice, podium discussions with guests and current examples of innovative housing are included.

Focus Work (Realization in the respective fields of the institutes. Definition of topics by professors, in consultation with the students. The content may also refer to an elective course. The performance assessment comprises either a purely written examination followed by an oral examination or a creative, manual or drawing work, including a description, followed by an oral examination. At least one focus work is a written work followed by an oral exam. The written work fulfills the criteria of a scientific paper in a formal sense. In addition to the design, crafting or drawing part, it also includes a written description of the question, methodology and knowledge gained. A creative, crafting or graphic focus work is shown in a public exhibition, a purely written focus work is accessible to the public.)
