Last Updated: 2026-02-05 14:54:48

Abstract

Most of the world's large rivers and lakes are shared by two or more countries. Thus, sustainable use of freshwater hinges on successful international cooperation. In part I, participants familiarize themselves with international freshwater management and acquire basic skills for assessing its success or failure. In part II, they analyze specific transboundary river and lake management cases.

Objective

Participants learn how to measure and explain variation in success/failure of international feshwater management efforts.

Content

Freshwater is crucial to all societies and ecosystems. Most of the world's large rivers and lakes, which are the principal sources of freshwater, are shared by two or more countries. Consequently, sustainable use of freshwater often hinges on successful international cooperation that integrates scientific knowledge into political action. In the first part of this research seminar (SS 2004) the participants familiarized themselves with key issues in international freshwater management and the research methodology to be used. In the second part (WS 2004/05) they will analyze specific transboundary river and lake management cases in a comparative perspective.
