Applied Ethology and Animal Welfare

Abstract
The course provides basic knowledge of behaviour of captive animals, and of interactions between behaviour, physiology and husbandry. There will also be a special focus on animal welfare including its definition, assessment and link to ethical values.
Objective
Students will - understand the basic concepts of Applied Ethology and Animal welfare - be able to critically analyse behavioural data - be trained to understand interdisciplinary and disciplinary research. - be able to critically analyze published research data. - be able to summarize and communicate scientific data
Content
Topics: - Applied ethology : definition and how to measure behaviour - Social behaviours - Animal handling - Behavioural needs - Enrichment - Animal welfare: definitions and assessment - Positive welfare - Behavioural assessment of pain and distress - Welfare challenges associated with animal captivity - Animal ethics - Normal behaviour and behavioural disorders - Low arousal behaviour (e.g. boredom) The final grade will be based on a home assignment - leaflet (30%) and a final written exam (70%, end of semester)
