Abstract

Focus of this course is on the realization of an atlas project in a small team. During the first part of the course, the necessary organizational, creative and technological basics will be provided. At the end of the course, the interactive atlas projects will be presented by the team members.

Objective

The goal of this course is to provide the students the theoretical background, knowledge and practical skills necessary to plan, design and create an interactive Web atlas based on modern Web technologies.

Content

This course will cover the following topics: - Web map design - Project management - Graphical user interfaces in Web atlases - Interactions in map and atlas applications - Web standards - Programming interactive Web applications - Use of software libraries - Cartographic Web services - Code repository - Copyright and the Internet

The final grade is made up for 50% of the grading of the compulsory continuous performance assessment tasks (which don’t have to be passed on their own) and for 50% of the oral examination during the examination session.The compulsory continuous performance assessment is as follows:1. A multimedia atlas prototype realized in a team. The prototype is due on the penultimate week of the semester.2. A presentation during the semester3. A personal "lab" book documenting the work done during the semester. It is due at the same time as the atlas prototype.
