FCL: Research Skills Workshop Series

Abstract
The course offers guidance and training on research skills reqired for writing a PhD thesis in a trans-disciplinary research environment. The course takes the form of a series of workshops which cover basic research skills, academic writing and publishing.
Objective
The course aims to support PhD researchers to develop an understanding of the - structural aspects of a typical PhD thesis; - character of the different parts of the thesis and their inter-relationship; - strategies and techniques for writing a PhD thesis. It does so by contextualing PhD writing within a wider framework of communicating academic ideas, through diverse media and publishing formats.
Content
The topics covered in the workshops series include: 1) The basic structure of a typical PhD thesis 2) Ethics 3) Basic library skills 4) "Research Collection" platform and "Open Access Publishing" 5) Videography 6) Statistics 7) Ethnography 8) Academic writing: "Writing a journal paper", "Writing a conference Paper", Preparing and presenting a poster" 9) "Researcher Biographies" a video series as communication training which will include writing the script for the video as well as presenting it on camera.
