Abstract
The seminar investigates the potential and the limitations of architectural criticism. The course comprises theoretical reflection, discussions of architectural objects, as well as work on texts.
Objective
In this seminar the students get to know the range of architecture mediation. They practice and improve their skill of using writing as a tool of architectural thinking and will become acquainted with the craft of journalistic and scientific research. The objective of the class is to enable the students to sharpen their critical senses towards architecture as well as defining their own position within the architectural discourse.
Content
The seminar is structured by the site visits and exercises. The students will study six case studies in the greater Zurich area. For preparation, they will read and discuss fundamental theoretical texts and meet and interview experts. On site, this knowledge will be presented for discussion in the form of short presentations and will ultimately be incorporated into the text work. Each individual exercise will be followed up and ultimately result in a discussion of the texts each student will be authoring.
