Abstract
Together we’ll be reading "The Craftsman" by Richard Sennett. The reading seminar will take place online with joint discussions and will be extended by presentations and practical exercises.
Objective
This semester we reflect on various aspects of craftsmanship and the attitude we take toward it in our discussion of the book "The Craftsman" by Richard Sennett. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of yourself within modern society and to investigate the process of creation taking place for each individual, as an extension of their own competences.
Content
Richard Sennett's book “The Craftsman” leads us from the organisation of the medieval guild system to the careful dissection of our tools to the emerging principles of self motivated work. Sennett, a philosopher and prime observer of society, tries to define craftsmanship as broadly as possible to explain the foundation of modern pragmatism and it’s reach into our modern day society. We will deal intensively with the various levels of meaning that Sennett generates from his stories and explanations for terms such as craft, tool, rhythm, space and creativity and examine them based on the principle of relevance to our own work as makers / students / architects.
