Abstract

Theory, practice, critique: Viennese Positions 1889 – today:Each lecture focuses on a central text, which will be made accessible for students. These texts will be analyzed, positioned in their historical context and confronted with the contemporary building practice.

Objective

Students will be encouraged to embed well known modern architectural theories in their immediate historical context and thus reassess their meanings.

Content

Theory, practice, critique: Viennese Positions 1889 – today: The theory of architecture in Vienna from 1889 onwards was rich and disputed. A strong polarization and an often very polemical tone make these controversies still inspirational for architectural students today. Viennese architectural theory reflects all important international ideas of the 19th and 20th centuries and is at the same time deeply embedded in the multifaceted history of this specific place.
