Abstract

This course guides students in analyzing and comprehending tropical agroecosystems and food systems. Students gain practical knowledge of field methods, diagnostic tools and survey methods for tropical soils and agroecosystems. An integral part of the course is the two-week field project in Kenya, which is co-organized with University of Eldoret (Kenya) and KU Leuven (Belgium).

Objective

(1) Overview of the major land use systems in the East African Rift valley. (2) Transdisciplinary analysis of agricultural production systems in Western Kenya. (3) Hands-on training on the use of field methods, diagnostic tools and survey methods. (4) Collaboration in international student teams (MSc students from Switzerland, Belgium and Kenya)

Does not take place this semester. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the class "Tropical cropping systems, soils and livelihoods" will not take place in autumn semester 2020. The reason for this is that the field project in Western Kenya will be canceled. Students in Agricultural Sciences who are dependent on this course to fulfill their Master Programme should contact the Study Coordinator, Emma Lindberg .
