Abstract

The lecture provides an introduction to basic immunology. In addition, a particular focus is set on concepts and mechanisms that are of pharmaceutical relevance.

Objective

Students know and understand: -- The basic concepts and mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity - How different immunologic processes act in concert during the development and regulation of the immune response -The mechanisms of action of drugs (selected examples) that modulate the immune response

Content

The lecture closely follows the Janeway’s Immunobiology Textbook (Chapters 1-11): - Basic concepts in immunology - Innate immunity: the first line of defense - Innate immunity: induced responses - Antigen recognition by T and B cells - Generation of antigen receptors - Antigen presentation to T lymphocytes - Lymphocyte receptor signalling - Development of T and B cells - T-cell-mediated immunity - The humoral immune response - Integrated dynamics of innate and adaptive immunity
