Abstract

In this module, the students learn about the basics of animal models: what are they, what are they used for and where do their limits lie. Examples include metabolic and behavioral science, transplantation medicine and experimental techniques to study gender differences. Ethical aspects in dealing with experimental animals are discussed in connection with the 3Rs principles.

Objective

The students get acquainted with the use of experimental animal in biomedical research, understand their advantages, see their limitations, and understand the associated ethical questions.

Content

Animal models are an important cornerstone of biomedical research, and this covers basic research but also applied, translational and clinical research. This module will teach the students about the nature of different animal models, their validity, and criteria that may help to choose the best animal model for a given question. Examples will be used to demonstrate advantages and disadvantages of various models, and how the experimental design may take such factors into account. The specific topics include research in metabolism and behavior, pharmacological differences among species, transplantation medicine and questions about photoperiods and the potential impact on disease states. Discussion points will be the use of “different” species like zebrafish, and ethical aspects in the use and care of experimental animals. Finally, sex specific differences in the pathogenesis of diseases will be discussed, and how such factors can be investigated experimentally.
