Rebuilding History (FS)
Umbaugeschichte (FS)
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:42:23
Abstract
The course addresses the challenging questions of the theme "Conversion" in terms of design and building construction from antiquity to the 20th century.
Objective
Recognize, interpret and chronologically trace traces of changes in historical buildings. The basic knowledge of building history is thus deepened, the sensitization for questions of building research is promoted.
Content
Building history is also a story of constant change and adaptation. Only the very few buildings have survived until today in their original state. Therefore, "building in existing buildings" is not only a term of the current architectural discourse - rather modernizations, adaptations to new uses, upgrades, repairs or the continued construction of existing buildings (up to the urban planning dimension) are core tasks of the architect. We look at case studies from antiquity to the 20th century and identify the architectural and constructive challenges faced by the builders in their use of the inventory. This includes an introduction to the history of the reconstruction, a definition and delineation of the terms conversion / retrofitting / repair and a critical discussion of the handling of the building stock at that time and again dealing with historical conversions today.
