Abstract

In the 4th semester, we design residential buildings in an urban context. Within the quarter analysed in the 3rd semester, you are going to choose your own site and develop a specific housing project for the respective location. The starting point is provided by building elements and spatial situations, which we measure during visits of buildings at the beginning of the semester.

Objective

- Design of an urban apartment building with a specific, context-related form of living - Learning about standards and typologies in housing - Anchoring in urban space through intensive examination of the transition between inside and outside - Understanding the relationship between structure, construction, space and detail - Draft and entry situation and development idea from city space to the apartment - Development of a spatial and atmospheric quality and materialization - Development of components in the interior and on the facade on a scale of 1:10 and 1:20 - High quality representation in collage, line (axonometry, floor plan 1:50, detailed drawing) and model (interior model 1:33 and 1:20, sectional model 1:10)

Content

In the course of the semester, you will develop a specific urban living space that can be flexibly inhabited by a wide variety of users. You anchor your designs in urban space through an intensive examination of the façade and the private outdoor space, but also through the examination of the ground floor in the urban environment as well as the development of the exterior space to the apartment. Through inspections, the study of references and in lectures, you develop a wealth of knowledge about a wide variety of components from the wall to the stairs to the kitchen. Based on a single component, you develop your floor plan. In doing so, you will familiarize yourself with different types of floor plans and get to know the principles of building depth, orientation and the relationship of the apartment to the outside space. Based on your layout idea, you derive the construction method for your project. You locate it by choosing your building site in the district. The conditions of the respective construction method and the parameters of the location form the framework for the design of a contemporary urban façade. As a design tool, you can work with 1:20 and 1:10 scale models. With the support of the materials library, you not only develop the atmospheric qualities in the living space from the optical and haptic properties of the materials used, but also develop a constructive knowledge. The focus is on the greatest possible match between structure, space and materialization. In addition to the detailed plan presentation on a scale of 1:50, which we devote ourselves to during the course of the semester, you map the spatial aspects of your project in digitally processed model photographs and are guided by photographers. The cooperation in groups of two allows the necessary depth of work. For more detailed information, please refer to the announcement of the semester course in January.
