Abstract
Process Cartography - The Alps as Common GroundThe design semesters of Professor Vogt circle around the Alpine arc, following the thesis that this can be read as an urban Common Ground. Every semester, the task of verifying this thesis arises by focusing on a metropolitan region and asking about its specific relation to the alpine region.
Objective
Independent thinking and acting.
Content
Vienna - perialpine and Central European landscape After Milano, Lyon, Ljubljana, Munich and Marseille, we will be dealing with the urban territory of Vienna in the spring semester 2020. The easternmost metropolitan region in the perialpine region is considered the political, economic and cultural center of Austria and occupies an important position in Central Europe, the sixth largest metropolis in the European Union. The task of the semester is to redefine the meaning and use of the alpine and perialpine landscape in the area of tension between extensification (museum landscape) and intensification (eg tourism, agriculture or energy production) with the aim of establishing a new productive relationship with the metropolitan region of Vienna. We are focusing on three perimeters, each of which covers a different scale level. In a first step we examine the large-scale relations of Vienna. On a two-day field trip we supplement the analytical view with a personal view of the place. From this the students develop an individual program as a basis for their design. The proposed interventions may vary between urban and landscape scenarios as well as concrete architectural proposals. With this approach we understand design not as an end product, but as a process, which is about making the individual steps visible and recording them.
