Abstract
Mechanics of materials: stress and strain, linear elastic deformations, bending, torsion, buckling, plasticity, time-dependent behavior of materials and fracture mechanics. Overview of the mechanical properties of the most important material classes: metals, ceramics and polymers.
Objective
This lecture is an introduction into the mechanical behavior of structures and materials. We will discuss both the continuum description of stress and strain, and the atomistic and molecular mechanisms that determine the required material parameters.
