Abstract
The lectures cover all the interdisciplinary questions of risk and safety of major technical systems, not only in the "classical" technical sense, but also rather in a wider sense including possible environmental risks. Approaches for risk minimisation and system optimisation are introduced.
Objective
The lectures cover all the interdisciplinary questions of risk and safety of major technical systems, not only in the "classical" technical sense, but also rather in a wider sense including possible environmental risks. In order to reach this, the basic tools for risk analysis are introduced. The applications of the tools are illustrated as part of the lec-tures and exercises. The applicability of the various methods are discussed and compared, and their limitations are evaluated. Furthermore, approaches for risk minimisation and system optimisation are introduced. Selected studies illustrate the state-of-the-art.

Definition of terms, e.g. hazard, risk and safety. Methodology of hazard identification, system analysis and risk as-sessment. Safety-technical requirements and evaluation principles for technical systems. Handling of special prob-lem situations in a risk analysis, such as the evaluation of human actions or errors, dependent failures and the han-dling of uncertainties. Exemplification of environmental risks and the development of damage scenarios. Risk evaluation and strategies for risk reduction. Exemplification of the Swiss regulation "Ordinance for the Protection against Major Accidents"
