Objective

Increasing the understanding and the analysis of factors and processes that shape the structure, function and dy-namics of mountain forest ecosystems, based on case studies. Practicing quantitative, process-oriented thinking. Introducing the students to the recent research literature on mountain forest ecology, which is mostly in English.

Content

- Ecological functions and specific characteristics of mountain forests - Considerations regarding the definition of plant communities in mountain regions - Ecotones (specifically treelines) - Succession - Case studies on tree regeneration ecology - Significance of herbivores for the structure and function of mountain forests - Anthropogenic environmental changes and their impacts on mountain forests.
